Bo Stokkermans wins Stipendium!

Annually, the KLEIO Foundation from Breda awards the Stipendium 01 to a young artist who is notably active in the city. The Stipendium, which consists of a cash prize and an artwork, has been awarded every year since 2022. On January 17, 2025, artist Bo Stokkermans will receive the Stipendium during the opening of the exhibition Space Mission at Stedelijk Museum Breda. 

Stipendium 01

Since 2023, Stedelijk Museum Breda has been asked by the KLEIO Foundation to make nominations for the Stipendium 01. This year, the museum nominated Stokkermans, partly in connection with the exhibition Space Mission– Hubert Leyendeckers, Bo Stokkermans & Tramaine de Senna. The Stipendium will be awarded on January 17, 2025, during the opening of Space Mission, where works by Stokkermans can be admired. The Stipendium consists of a cash prize of €5,000.00 and a sculpture by the Breda-based sculptor Felix van Breugel.

Material, Color, and Form

Bo Stokkermans was trained at St. Joost in Breda, after which he was active for several years in the collective of artists under the name De School. Before studying in Breda, he completed his education as a graphic designer in Rotterdam. He discovered at the art academy that visual arts offered him more opportunities for expression. His work does not focus on a fixed theme, but rather on connecting color and form with various materials. Using both classical and modern techniques, he is building a diverse body of work.

Thanks to the Stipendium 01, Stokkermans is able to create new works and contribute to the realization of the Space Mission exhibition. Working in a museum is not new to him; a previous installation of his was shown at Museum Jan Cunen in Oss. However, this will be the first time he can create and present new works specifically for a museum.

KLEIO manages the fund created from the sale of the building that housed the artist initiative Lokaal 01 between 1981 and 2013. Lokaal 01 existed for over 32 years and presented the works of hundreds of artists, often at the beginning of their artistic careers.
