Animal city

Visit the project space Next where Animal City comes to life. Here, the animals are in charge! The colorful illustrations by Djenné Fila (Tilburg 1995) take you into a world full of fantasy, where you can build and roar. With her fairy tale-like work, she brings stories to life for both children and adults. Get inspired, start creating yourself, and help build our growing Animal City!

Workshops 'Seeing Like an Animal'

Families can attend a workshop every Wednesday and Friday in July. The workshops last 1.5 hours and are led by Djenné Fila or museum educators. Before the creative work begins, you'll dive together into the story of the Nassaus and the animals of that time by visiting the exhibition. After that, you'll create a collage. This will become part of Animal City and can be admired in Next for the rest of the summer. Will your work be hanging in our museum soon?

Read more and book your tickets for a workshop session of your choice.

If you give the animals a voice: what does the city look like?

Drawing fantasy animals and buildings

On all other days, you won't be bored either. Djenné Fila has created several Drawing Starters for you to choose from. So, grab fineliners and colored pencils to design new animals and buildings. Add your work to Animal City and see how it grows and changes every day.

Djenné Fila

In 2023, she won the Golden Brush, the most prestigious jury prize for the best-illustrated children's book in the Netherlands, for her illustrations in "A Brief History of Humankind Written Through Animal Eyes." With her own work, Djenné has already brought various animal stories to life—with creative combinations of techniques and materials, in colorful layers, surprising textures, and striking lines. Admire her fairy tale-like work in Animal City.
