CollectieLab

CollectieLab is an open platform for the discovery and development of the Breda Collection. It presents unique and special objects from the depot.

The large collections of Breda are virtually unknown to the public and to art professionals. What are the stories behind them? Where do the pieces come from? Who made them? Who are the people in the paintings?

It is also important that the collections are taken care of and properly maintained. What needs to be done to preserve important objects for the future? How do you repair damage caused by use and wear? When is restoration no longer an option?

At CollectieLab we invite the involvement of the public in unravelling the secrets of the collection. We record the research and restoration process of these items. On some days you can also see the restorers at work in the museum.

Textile restoration: The banner from the St Barbara Cathedral
Thursday 4, Friday 5 and Saturday 6 October 2018, from 11-5 pm.

Follow the textile restoration of the silk banner from the St Barbara Cathedral (1869-1970) in Breda. This cathedral was built and designed by architect Pierre Cuypers (1827-1921). After restoration, the banner will be on display in the CollectieLab exhibition:The Lost Cathedral of Cuypers from 13 October 2018 to 3 March 2019.
The banner is made of white silk with red silk side panels and the inscription Lauda. Sion. Salvatorem. In. Hymnis. Et. Cantaticis. The centre is adorned with a quatrefoil of appliqué depicting a procession. On the reverse side we see the view of a city. Beautiful rose branch embroidery runs along the frame of the banner.

Textile conservator Marjolein Homan Free will be working on restoration of the banner from 11am to 5pm in the CollectieLab. She’ll be happy to answer any questions you have.
