Guardian Spirits features recent work by seven Ukrainian artists: Myroslava Bachkur, Serhii Dekaliuk, Vitalii Hrekh, Vova Keno, Irina Maksymova, Notuko and Volodymyr Semkiv.
The war with Russia also affects Ukrainian art, which is reflected in drawings, paintings, sculptures and animations by the participating artists. They show us how much art can mean when freedom and democracy are threatened.
Photographer Fons Manders works as a volunteer at the De Koepel refugee shelter in Breda. He became fascinated by the images Ukrainian refugees choose as the home screen of their phones, and the stories connected to them. In Guardian Spirits, Manders shows a series of photographs of these home screens.
