Capricorne is the oldest living artist from Curaçao, where his gaze formed. The environment of the island and the Caribbean culture define his work. Even between 1974 and 1993, when he lived alternately in Breda and on Curaçao, symbolism, magic and mythical stories remained an important source of inspiration.
At first glance, the works make a cheerful and carefree impression, but they are indeed rooted in complex human reality. Capricorne thereby refers to personal and universal subjects. In addition to his own history, the colonial past of his native country plays a role. The relationship between man and nature is also a recurring theme.
Through 80 paintings, drawings and sculptures with the themes "Stage of Life," "Metamorphoses, Magic & Rituals" and "Sources of Life," Mother Tree takes you through the fascinating world of José Maria Capricorne.
This exhibition is part of the visual arts program of the museum with artists linked to Breda, such as Ruud van Empel, Pieter Laurens Mol, Sef Peeters, Marenne Welten and Martin and Inge Riebeek.
