In our permanent exhibition The Collection, a number of objects and paintings are temporarily trading places with video portraits by Martin and Inge Riebeek. This gives old stories a surprisingly contemporary perspective. At the same time, their video portraits connect local history with the larger world.
Video portraits
The artist duo Martin and Inge Riebeek made a selection from their collection of over 500 video portraits for The Collection x Martin and Inge Riebeek. In these portraits, they question people about what really matters in their own life. The answers are recorded in one single take. The people walk up to the camera, tell their story and then disappear from view. They have now made video portraits in 22 different countries, all under the name The Essential.
In juxtaposition with objects and paintings from the museum’s permanent display, a wide range of subjects are addressed; religion, love, war, the climate, the position of women, and more.
A fresh perspective
In the coming years, the museum will be inviting various artists to form their own response to the permanent exhibition The Collection - 450 Years of Art and History. They can glean inspiration from the objects and paintings of the historical collection or take the underlying themes and stories as a starting point. This gives visitors a space to view the collection from a fresh perspective and to connect the history with today’s world.
Martin and Inge Riebeek
Martin and Inge Riebeek, both graduates of the St Joost School of Art & Design in Breda, have been working together since the late 1990s. In their now extensive oeuvre the creation of an encounter and of a connection between people is a central theme. This is reflected in the interactive installations they make – such as Heaven At 4 A.M. (2003) for a juvenile detention centre or HELLO Future (2014) for Helmond station – as well as in their long-term film projects such as The Essential (2010-present).
